Not all digestive discomfort feels the same — and the type of sensation you feel can reveal a lot about what’s actually happening inside your gut. Gas, pressure, and cramping each point toward different physiological patterns, many of which show up clearly on the GI-MAP.
Gas usually indicates fermentation imbalance. When organisms like Klebsiella, Citrobacter, or Candida break down carbohydrates, they produce gas that expands the abdomen. Gas-driven discomfort tends to feel bubbly, movable, or noisy, often worsening after meals higher in fiber, starch, or sugar.
Pressure, by contrast, reflects slowed motility or undigested food lingering in the stomach or small intestine. Low pancreatic enzyme output can cause proteins and fats to move slowly, creating fullness, heaviness, or a “stuck” sensation. Pressure often worsens in the evening when enzyme output naturally dips, connecting with metabolic issues discussed ealier.
Cramping typically signals inflammation or intestinal permeability. When the gut lining is irritated — especially with elevated calprotectin or secretory IgA — the intestines become more sensitive to movement and food passing through. Cramping often occurs post-meal or first thing in the morning, matching the symptom cycles explored in below. In some cases, all three sensations can overlap. For example, yeast overgrowth can create gas through fermentation, pressure through motility slowdown, and cramping by releasing irritating metabolites.
Identifying whether your discomfort is gas, pressure, or cramping helps narrow down the underlying cause.
The GI-MAP then connects those sensations to measurable markers — making digestive symptoms far easier to interpret and treat.
