One of the most common questions patients ask after reviewing a GI-MAP is:
“There’s so much here — how do I know what actually matters?”
This is where interpretation becomes more important than the numbers themselves. Not every elevated marker is equally important, and not every finding is the root cause. You can see how we prioritize these patterns clinically on the GI-MAP PAGE.
The first principle is to look for patterns, not isolated numbers. For example, elevated dysbiosis markers paired with symptoms that worsen later in the day almost always point to microbial imbalance as the primary driver. This timing-based pattern often matches the daily rhythms described in Blog Post — Why Inflammation Leads to Morning vs. Evening Symptom Differences.
The second principle is to identify what affects digestion upstream — stomach acid, enzymes, and bile flow. Markers like steatocrit (poor bile flow) or evidence of weak stomach acid have a downstream impact on almost everything else: fermentation, inflammation, and food reactivity. These upstream digestion issues mirror the physiology outlined in Blog Post — Why Bile Flow Shapes Your Entire Digestion.
Root-cause findings have one thing in common: They explain multiple symptoms at once.
The third principle is to look for inflammatory load. Elevated calprotectin or high secretory IgA indicates that the gut lining is actively responding to irritation. If inflammation is high, it often overshadows smaller microbial findings because inflammation changes motility, permeability, and symptom patterns. These immune-driven shifts resemble the cycles described in Blog Post — Why Symptoms Come and Go.
Next, check for fermentation drivers. If opportunistic bacteria like Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Morganella, or sulfur-producers are elevated, they may be the primary source of bloating, distention, brain fog, or timing-dependent symptoms. These higher-fermentation profiles align with the physiology described in Blog Post — IBS Symptoms & Fermentation Patterns.
Then determine whether yeast overgrowth is amplifying symptoms. Yeast produces metabolites that affect energy, cravings, mood, and inflammation. When yeast appears alongside dysbiosis or poor bile flow, yeast often becomes a significant contributor. These yeast-driven patterns resemble those described in Blog Post — Candida & Gut Symptoms.
Finally — and this is often the most important step — evaluate the barrier function. Elevated zonulin indicates increased permeability, which amplifies reactions to all other findings. Permeability makes small issues feel big, simple meals feel reactive, and symptoms fluctuate unpredictably. These barrier-related shifts match the physiology outlined in Blog Post — Zonulin / Leaky Gut.
Taken together:
The “most important finding” is the one that explains the largest number of symptoms and creates the biggest downstream effect.

I’m a chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner based on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
My work is dedicated to helping people who have been searching for answers—those dealing with chronic digestive issues, fatigue, skin conditions, hormonal imbalances, skeletal and musculoskeletal problems, and other symptoms that traditional evaluations often overlook.
Through helping thousands of patients, I’ve perfected a clear, systematic process for uncovering the real root causes behind these issues.
I use the GI-MAP, advanced blood chemistry, and comprehensive functional lab testing to explain the “why” behind the symptoms in a way that finally makes sense.
In addition to caring for patients in my New York City practice, I also work virtually with those who can’t make it into the office and want deeper insight, clearer explanations, and a truly personalized root-cause evaluation.
