When certain foods trigger bloating, fatigue, brain fog, or skin changes, people often assume they’ve developed a “food sensitivity.” But in many cases, the issue isn’t the food — it’s the state of the gut. When the immune system inside the digestive tract is activated, foods become irritants not because they’re harmful, but because the gut lining is inflamed, permeable, or overwhelmed. These internal patterns show up clearly on the GI-MAP.
One of the biggest reasons foods trigger symptoms is intestinal permeability. When zonulin is elevated, the tight junctions in the gut lining loosen, allowing partially digested food particles to slip into the bloodstream. This creates temporary immune reactions that mimic food sensitivities.
Another driver is dysbiosis. When opportunistic bacteria overgrow, they create inflammation that amplifies immune responses to foods. Meals that contain fiber, starch, or fermentation-prone carbohydrates can spike reactivity simply because the microbiome is imbalanced.
Yeast overgrowth — especially elevated Candida — can also make food reactions worse. Candida produces metabolites that irritate the gut lining and stress the immune system, causing foods that were once tolerated to trigger symptoms like bloating, redness, or fatigue. Inflammation itself can create meal-related symptoms. Elevated secretory IgA or calprotectin means the gut’s immune system is already activated; eating triggers more activity, so normal foods begin to feel “reactive.”
Food reactions aren’t always about the food — they’re often about the environment inside the gut.
The GI-MAP helps determine whether permeability, inflammation, yeast, or dysbiosis is driving the reactivity so the focus stays on restoring gut balance, not eliminating foods unnecessarily.
